Personally or professionally no one likes breaking up. Part of our human nature, we like to make connections and feel safe to be fully us in them. But there comes a time in business and life in which breakups need to happen for our sanity and success.
Breakup letters with clients are actually pretty easy because all you talk about is for the betterment of them and their business. A client breakup letter can go something like this:
“Hey (insert name),
As we delve deeper into our work together, my (insert number) years of experience are reminding me that though I love and adore all that you are about, professionally I lack some key aspects that you need.
And because I love, adore, and respect you so much. I only want the best for you. And I know what is best for you is to work with someone who can (insert areas of weakness).
I have personally reached out to a few colleagues on your behalf who I know are rockstars in these areas and I am beyond confident that they can take you to (insert goal) where I know I cannot.
Here is their information and I am to get on a 3-way call with all of you to make the transition smooth. (insert the colleagues’ information- ideally 3 options).
I know they can deliver everything your heart desires. And I will always be here rooting you on. I am your biggest cheerleader.
P.S. Don’t worry about the contractual side of it all. Check out Section (insert number) of our agreement which covers those details.”
Don’t be scared of the breakup. Just like with love, it is the best thing for both of you.
