We have all heard the expression, “there is no new idea under the sun”. Which is a very true statement at this point in the evolution of humanity. But many entrepreneurs interpret this saying as a free for all to do as they want with the intellectual property they run into.
All I can do is say, “NOOOOOOOO!”
Intellectual property is defined by the World Intellectual Property Organization as “Intellectual property refers to creations of the mind, such as inventions; literary and artistic works; designs; and symbols, names and imag-es used in commerce.” http://www.wipo.int/about-ip/en/
Which means someone's work product, thoughts, de-signs, images, ideologies - have value and in turn, legal protection as any other asset would.
What this means for you is that your old high school English teacher was right when they taught you how to give credit to a source- ALWAYS DO IT.
Now I know, entrepreneurs aren’t a big fan of quoting sources, but let me share a few truths with you.
• You look smart. Yes, quoting sources makes you look like a smarty pants in all the good ways.
• It’s good mojo. In today’s age of Google word and image alerts, people will find out that you are using their information. And because you clearly respect that person’s work, don’t piss them off by not sharing the credit.
• The legal battle. Yep, anyone worth their salt will protect their intellectual property at all cost. So if you steal their work, you will have a costly legal battle on your hand. And if they have trademarked, service marked, or patented their work- you are screwed.
So be kind and give the credit where the credit is due.
